12 Critical Areas of Concern

The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was launched during the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing.  The Declaration identifies 12 critical areas of concern for women and girls across the globe.   2010 marks the 15th anniversary of the conference.  In this Forum, we will examine our country’s progress to address these concerns.  You can view an executive summary document here in PDF.
Poverty:  Challenges the private sector and governments at every level, to address the increase of women living in poverty throughout the globe.
Power SharingAcknowledges the fundamental right and responsibility of women to participate at all levels of decision making in all spheres of society.
Education and Training: Focuses on transforming the entire educational system into an environment ensuring all women the right to literacy and freedom to choose how to fulfill their potential.
Health: Establishes culturally sensitive health care (physical and mental) as a right for all women and girls and promotes funded research and dissemination of information on women’s health issues.
Human Rights: Asserts that the human rights of women and girls are inalienable, and are integral to and indivisible from universal human rights.  To ratify and implement CEDAW
Violence Against Women: Demands that women be protected from violence in any form (physical, mental, emotional) in the home, at work or in the community, to protect their human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Institutional Mechanisms: Calls for modifying existing institutions and creating new mechanisms to facilitate the full integration of women into society and electing women to office.
Peace/Armed ConflictAddresses the reality that women are particularly vulnerable during armed conflicts and that ending militarism is a priority for their advancement.
Environment: Promotes women’s participation in the repair, healing and protection of the natural environment and polluted urban environments.
Media: Emphasizes the importance of changing stereotyping and inequality of women’s access to and participation in all forms of communication.
Economic JusticeOffers strategies for women’s economic security through employment, cooperatives, businesses and other economic opportunities.
Girl Child: Develops the girl-child’s potential in a nurturing environment that meets their needs and safeguards their rights to full equality.
