Situation in Paraguay Affects Democracy, Says UNASUR Secretary

Asuncion, Jun 22 (Prensa Latina) The secretary general of the Union of South American
Nations (UNASUR), Ali Rodriguez Araque, said on Friday that what has happened in
Paraguay affects democracy in the integration bloc, because that country is the pro
 tempore president of the organization.

Rodriguez Araque's statements came at the end of a meeting between a delegation
of ten foreign ministers from the member countries of UNASUR and Paraguayan President
Fernando Lugo to analyze the crisis caused by the Congress' effort to destitute the head
of State by impeaching him.

He added that the presidents of the member countries learned about what is going on in
Paraguay and decided to send a mission of foreign ministers to get first-hand information
about the real situation.

Rodriguez Araque pointed out that participants in the meeting agreed that one of the
main rectors of democracy is the upright administration of justice and, in that framework,
the respect for the due process with guarantees for defendants to defend themselves
above all if he is a popularly-elected president.

The UNASUR secretary general added that the meetings with political parties, the
Parliament and whoever can contribute to find a peaceful solution to the current crisis
 would continue on Friday.
